Coming to a lawyer was not something I expected to do. The situation with my husband had been going on for months and I was exhausted before I even picked up the phone. What surprised me about Pelita Adil was how unhurried everything felt. Nobody pushed me toward any particular path. I came in to understand my options for maintenance and left feeling, for the first time in weeks, that I had some clarity. The fee was as stated — nothing added.

My wife and I had agreed to part ways some months before we came to Pelita Adil. We just did not know how to do it properly. The team handled the petition from start to finish. Every step was explained before it happened. The whole process took about four and a half months, which matched what we were told to expect. I would particularly mention Li Yen, who answered every one of my emails without making me feel like a nuisance.

I came for the Comprehensive Family Affairs Plan after separating from my husband. I had not updated my will in eight years and my EPF nomination was still wrong. Nurul Ain sat with me for nearly two hours going through everything. The final file they produced is organised in a way I can actually use. My only comment is that it took a little longer than I expected — closer to six weeks rather than four. But the result was thorough and I felt properly looked after.

I was facing a maintenance application I had not anticipated. My first call to Pelita Adil was on a Thursday afternoon and they called back the same day. The session itself was very grounding. Nurul Ain was honest with me about where things stood legally — she did not soften things unnecessarily or exaggerate in the other direction. The written summary she sent after helped me explain the situation to my family. Good value for the clarity it gave me.

My former husband and I agreed very early on that we wanted the process to be as civil as possible for the sake of our daughter. Pelita Adil matched that intention completely. The parenting arrangement they drafted was sensible and balanced — they asked us the right questions rather than imposing a template. The court steps were handled without drama. It is a strange thing to say about a divorce, but the experience of working with this firm was genuinely calm.

I came after my company restructure left me holding several different accounts and property interests I wanted to consolidate. Pelita Adil put together a family file that actually made sense of the various documents I had been collecting in folders for years. The EPF nomination section alone was something I had been putting off for a long time. I now have a clear picture of where everything stands. Straightforward and professionally done.

Detailed Accounts

Case Studies

These are composite accounts, constructed from the types of matters we handle most often, to illustrate what the process looks like in practice. Names and identifying details are not real.

The Situation

A woman in her forties, employed part-time in retail, approached us after her husband of fourteen years indicated he would be ceasing household contributions. She had two school-aged children and no recent knowledge of what she was entitled to under Malaysian law. She arrived anxious and uncertain whether she could afford a lawyer at all.

What We Did

We conducted a Spousal Maintenance Discussion session. We went through the provisions of the Act, the factors the court weighs, and what a realistic range of maintenance might look like in her circumstances. We prepared a written note summarising the session for her records. We also flagged that her husband's EPF nomination still named her as beneficiary — a practical detail that often goes unnoticed during a separation.

The Outcome

She left with a clear sense of where she stood legally and what her options were. She subsequently instructed us to write to her husband's solicitors, which resulted in a negotiated consent order — without court proceedings. The matter closed in roughly ten weeks from first contact. Total cost: the advisory session fee plus a separately quoted letter-writing retainer.

"I thought going to a lawyer would mean more fights. It turned out to be the thing that stopped them."

The Situation

A couple in their fifties had agreed privately to divorce after their children had completed their university studies. They were on cordial terms and did not want an adversarial process. They had some shared property and one child still receiving financial support from them. Neither had been through legal proceedings before.

What We Did

We handled the Divorce by Mutual Consent in full. We drafted a petition under Section 52, prepared the consent terms addressing the property, the ongoing support arrangements for their child, and the financial division between them. We coordinated with the High Court registry in Penang, attended the directions hearing, and handled the decree process through to the decree absolute.

The Outcome

The decree was granted five months after filing. The couple had stayed in communication throughout and told us the process had been far less stressful than they had feared. Both returned subsequently — one to update his will, and the other to have her property documents reviewed — as separate clients. We consider that a measure of something having gone reasonably right.

"We told them at the start that we wanted this to be dignified. They understood that without needing to be told twice."

The Situation

A man in his early sixties, recently retired, came to us following the passing of a close friend whose estate had become complicated by the absence of a current will and an outdated EPF nomination. He wanted to put his own affairs in order before similar problems could arise for his family.

What We Did

We conducted the Comprehensive Family Affairs Plan. Over three meetings we reviewed all his existing documents, drafted a new will, coordinated his EPF nomination update, reviewed the title positions on two properties, and corrected an error in a deed that had gone unnoticed for several years. Every document was indexed and filed in a clearly organised family file with an explanatory cover note.

The Outcome

He left with a complete picture of his household's legal position. He has since returned for an annual review — not because he was encouraged to, but because, as he put it, it gives him a useful checkpoint each year. He has referred three members of his extended family to us in the period since.

"I came here to avoid leaving a mess behind. They helped me do exactly that."
